According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that manifests as difficulties in communicating emotions in social relationships and impaired sensory integration.
People on the autism spectrum usually have problems with eye contact and physical interaction. They do not always understand others’ intentions, suggestions, or certain social norms, which leads to feelings of isolation and difficulties in establishing relationships.
Social awareness is built on various levels and through different methods.
These include:
- scientific conferences,
- social campaigns,
- special schools or schools with integration classes,
- global awareness events, such as:
- World Autism Awareness Day (April 2),
- Autistic Pride Day (June 18),
- European Autism Week (December 1–7),
- incorporating topics related to the spectrum into fragments or entire plots of films and TV series (e.g., “The Good Doctor”, “Atypical”) as well as other cultural works.
